How to copy a file's link automatically when you upload it

Cover image

Sometimes you upload a file only to share it. It might be a screenshot for a chat or an image for a post. You want the link as soon as the upload is done.

file.rocks has a setting for this. When it is on, the public URL of the file you just uploaded is copied to your clipboard when the upload finishes. You can paste it right away. The setting is off by default, so you turn it on once.

Open Settings, then Preferences. Find Auto-copy link on upload. Its description reads "Automatically copy the public URL to your clipboard when you upload a single file".

Turn the toggle on. A toast confirms it with "Auto-copy link enabled".

The setting is saved in the browser you use. If you switch to another browser or another device, turn it on again there.

Step 2: Upload a single file

Upload one file to your bucket the way you normally do. If you need a refresher, see how to upload files to your own bucket.

When the upload finishes, file.rocks copies the file's public URL to your clipboard. A toast shows "Link copied to clipboard!" next to a Settings button. The button takes you back to Preferences if you want to change the setting.

The copied link is your bucket's public domain followed by the file's path. Paste it wherever you want to share the file.

The link is only copied when the upload has exactly one file. If you upload two or more files at once, nothing is copied. You can still copy each link by hand, as shown in how to copy a file link from your own bucket.

Your bucket also needs a public domain. If the bucket has no public domain set, there is no public URL to copy, so nothing happens.

The copy happens after the upload completes, not when it starts. Wait for the file to finish before you paste.

This setting copies the plain public URL. It does not create a share link, and it does not add a password or an expiry date. If you need either of those, use the guides in the Related section below.

Step 4: Turn it off

Go back to Settings, then Preferences. Turn off Auto-copy link on upload. A toast confirms it with "Auto-copy link disabled".

After that, uploads work as before and nothing is copied for you. The change applies to the browser you made it in.

Your files stay in the bucket you connected, and file.rocks is how you manage them.
